Biography
Professor Hae Chang Gea is a tenured professor in the Depar tm ent of M echanical and Aer os pace Engineering at Rutgers University, holding a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, obtained in 1993. Renowned for his pioneering work in topology optimization, Professor Gea has made significant contributions to the field. Recently, Professor Gea took on the role of Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Rutgers University’s School of Graduate Studies, where he oversees all graduate academic affairs across the university. Prior to this, he was the Associate Dean of Graduate and Professional Education. His efforts in forging strategic collaborations with leading international academic institutions have significantly bolstered Rutgers' global standing.
Presentation Abstract
Product development traditionally involves a costly and iterative process of design, redesign, and analysis. This cyclic nature often results in significant resource expenditure and time delays. The central question of this presentation is whether topology optimization can shift this paradigm by allowing for the direct derivation of optimal designs from functional requirements, thereby minimizing the need for iterative redesign and analysis. This presentation seeks to explore topology optimization as a new design paradigm that challenges traditional methodologies in product development.
